Satsuma vase with Foo Dog handles – ca. 1900
This beautiful Satsuma vase is an excellent example of Japanese export ware from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The piece is entirely hand-painted in vibrant colours on a striking blue background that gradually fades into a radiant yellow base, creating a remarkable visual effect.
Both sides feature colourful Mandarin birds surrounded by blossoming cherry branches and decorative foliage. The composition is enhanced by earthy brown Foo Dog handles that give the vase a strong ceremonial appearance. Its elegant tripod base further contributes to the distinctive and eye-catching design.
The neck is richly decorated with gilt moriage ornamentation and raised relief decoration on a yellow ground. This refined technique is among the most desirable characteristics of high-quality Satsuma ware. The underside bears a hand-painted signature confirming its Japanese artistic origin.
